Basquiat and Madonna dated in 1982/1983. Maripol knew them both independent of their relationship with one another. She knew Madonna prior as two of her closest friends were backup dancers for the musician. An artist herself, Maripol hung one of her first paintings for a Madonna performance at the Lucky Strike, and she, along with David Svitzer, made the pop star jewelry.
